ABI’S MALARIA CONTROL PROGRAM NOW IN ZAMBALES ENDEMIC AREAS

Subic, Zambales – IP communities from malaria endemic areas in Subic and San Marcelino, Zambales welcomes the Malaria Control Program of the Advocates for Community Health, Incorporated (ACHI) and the Alay Bayan, Incorporated (ABI).

According to Dr. Eulalia M. Botin, ACHI Program Coordinator, the program aims to equip Community Health Workers (CHW) in the early diagnosis of malaria. “The program is more on prevention and that the program activities were designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitude of community people in handling malaria cases and lobbying for health services particularly in far-flung malaria endemic communities”, Botin added.

Ms. Lorena R. Villareal, ABI Project Officer, expressed that the Malaria Management Training (MMT) held in the first quarter of 2011 participated-in by twenty six (26) IP community members and CHW trainees once again proved that members of the indigenous communities have the capacity to address factors rendering them vulnerable to disasters like health concerns. Ms. Villareal added that the program is in line with ABI’s Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation Program.

Among the topics discussed in the Malaria Management trainings are:

1) Life Cycle of Malaria Parasite

2) Causes of Malaria

3) Epidemiology of Malaria

4) Pathophysiology

5) Signs and Symptoms

6) Differential Diagnosis

7) Diagnosing patients with Malaria

8) Treatment and

9) Prevention.

The training resulted in the formation of Malaria Brigades that will implement the plan to help prevent malaria outbreaks in their areas.

ABI receives “Sukli sa suki” cash reward from Mercury Drug



November 8, 2010 --Angeles City, Pampanga – ALAY BAYAN, Incorporated receives twenty five thousand pesos (P25,000.00) in cheque from the Mercury Drug Corporation through its representatives Ms. Eloja Pineda-Garcia and Mr. Danilo Aquino. The grant was handed over by the Department of Social Welfare & Development Region III Representative Ms Susan Soriano-Hernandez today, November 8 2010.ABI’s Vice Chairman of the Board, Mr Dexter Datu, received the cash reward with the institution’s Project Officer Ms Lorena Rivera-Villareal.The cash reward is one of Mercury Drug Corporation’s Promo “SUKLI SA SUKI” in its 65th year anniversary celebration. According to Ms. Garcia, ABI was chosen during the grand raffle draw last August 15, 2010. Ms Garcia added that ABI is among the sixty five charitable institutions granted with cash rewards.

ABI conducts Community-Based Disaster Management Trainors' Training in Zambales



Alay Bayan Incorporated (ABI), with its campaign to educate vulnerable sectors about community-based and development oriented disaster management, reaches out to Zambales province in coordination with Gov. Amor Deloso. As a start, the Trainors' training on Community-Based Disaster Management was conducted on July 13-15, 2009 at the Steeve Lee's resort in Candelaria Zambales.

Among the participants are farmers from the towns of Botolan, Iba, Candelaria,Masinloc and Sta Cruz. Staff members and missionary sisters from the Mother Rita Community Center in Candelaria were among the participants.

Cuayan Day Care Program on its 8th year!



Now on its eight year, Cuayan Day Care program continues to serve some 80 under priviledge children of dumpsite residents in Brgy Cuayan, Angeles City through the support of Access to Information(a2i). The day care program is but one component of the Community Support Program for the Empowerment and Development of Cuayan dumpsite residents implemented by Alay Bayan, Incorporated(ABI).

The program which started in 2001, as a partnership program of ABI with the Community-Based Health Program-Central Luzon, serves an average of 80 children beneficiaries annually through the day care and feeding program.

Health education trainings were also conducted for Cuayan residents to include Basic health Orientation (BHO), Concepts of Health and Diseases, Eye and Ear Screening training and Herbal Medicine Preparation training. Parents of children beneficiaries helped put up a community herbal garden.

ABI pushes Neem Planting in Dilasag and Casiguran to control Malaria Vector


In its effort to help prevent Malaria outbreak in the northern part of Aurora as what has happened in Brgy Zabali,Baler during the last quarter of 2008 til the first quarter of 2009, Alay Bayan, Inc. pushes the planting of neem seeds and seedlings in some malaria endemic areas in Dilasag and Casiguran Aurora.

Members of ABI assisted Disaster Management organizations have already started implementing the campaign to plant neem seeds as part of ther counter disaster plans (disaster risk reduction plans). ABI also plans to provide trainings on neem oil extraction and production of neem by-products like neem soaps and lotions.

ABI co sponsors Malaria Management Training in Aurora



True to its mission of building resilient communities, Alay Bayan, Incorporated (ABI) co sponsored the Malaria Management Training recently conducted in Dilasag Aurora last May 28-30, 2008. ABI's main partner in this endeavor is the Advocates for Community Health, Incorporated (ACHI), a non government organization of medical professionals advocating for the advancement of community health.
27 participants, mostly barangay health workers and barangay officials from the towns of Dilasag, Casiguran and Baler completed the 3-day seminar workshop.
Trainors from ACHI discussed 9 topics in Malaria Management to wit: 1) Life Cycle of Malaria Parasite 2) Causes of Malaria 3) Epidemiology of Malaria 4) Pathophysiology 5) Signs and Symptoms 6) Differential Diagnosis 7) Diagnosing patients with Malaria 8) Treatment and 9) Prevention. The training ended with area planning for Information-Education Campaign with the participants as main machinery of the campaign.
The activity was successfully conducted in cooperation with the Dilasag municipal government headed by no less than the Hon. Mayor Victorio Briones and his Private Secretary Freddie Asis and the Municipal Health Office of Casiguran headed by Dr. Meryll Danay.###
